Press Releases

August 29, 2016 - “Check out the Internet” at Roselle Library
Users of Roselle Public Library rely on their Library to borrow books, movies, music and more – and now, users can even check out the Internet! Thanks to a donation from TechSoup & Mobile Beacon, library card holders can borrow a portable mobile hotspot for free home Internet access for a week.

“Part of our mission as a public library is to ‘provide access to educational, cultural, and recreational information.’ Loaning hotspots that patrons can use at home is one way we can do that,” said Lynn Dennis, the Library’s Technical Services Manager. “Users can connect to all the great resources the Library offers on its website and to everything else the Internet has to offer.”

The Franklin R850 hotspot is easy to use with a simple one-button interface. It provides a safe and secure reliable Internet connection to get online, send email, watch videos, and update social networks whether in the car on a road trip, at afterschool events, or at home in the backyard. You can multitask schoolwork and entertainment while in transit and share life’s adventures with friends and family.

“This has got to be the easiest technology ever!” said the Library’s Circulation Department Manager Christy Snyders.

The hotspot is small enough to fit in a pocket, but powerful enough to connect up to 10 Wi-Fi devices simultaneously – smart  phones, notebook and tablet computers, printers, cameras, e-book readers, etc. – for up to 10 hours of continuous use with bandwidth comparable to in-home high speed internet service. Smart phone and tablet users can save on roaming charges and minutes by using the Wi-Fi setting on their device to connect to the hotspot. The 4G LTE hotspot connects via the Sprint network so users enjoy long-range Wi-Fi, both indoors and out for hours of connectivity while on-the-go.

Roselle Library card holders can check out the mobile hotspot for a week at a time. Place a hold on the hotspot through the Library catalog, or call 630-529-1641 for more information.
Roselle Public Library is located at 40 S. Park Street, Roselle, IL.

August 15, 2016 - New Tech for Kids at Roselle Public Library

We are excited about two of our most recent additions for children in our Youth Services Department: the Krayon iPad Kiosk & Playaway Launchpads!

Since the popular Krayon Kiosk was installed last month, children have been making it their first destination when they visit the Youth Services Department upstairs at the Library. The Kiosk has two iPads attached, each featuring the award-winning ABCmouse app. The ABCmouse curriculum is designed to help young children (ages 2-7+) build a strong foundation for future academic success. ABCmouse is 100% educational with 5,000+ learning activities across all major subject areas- reading, math, science, social studies, art and music. Best of all, kids love it!

“The Krayon Kiosk is a great companion to the AWE early learning station,” said Leann Skeens, Youth Services Department Manager. “More children have the opportunity to participate in educational and fun computer activities in the Library. The experience is positive and they want to come again.”

And if the iPads are in use... not to worry! Patrons can use their own smart phone, tablet or laptop on the Library's Wi-Fi, to access ABCmouse whenever - and wherever they are - in the Library by browsing to
http://abcmouse.com/library_account.

The Playaway Launchpads are also new at the Library. The Launchpads are pre-loaded learning tablets created just for children by Findaway. Inc. Aimed at children 3-5 years old, Each Launchpad tablet contains several apps on a specific theme – numbers, letters, transportation, and more.

Roselle Library card holders can borrow a Launchpad tablet for a week to explore and discover the various apps.

Executive Director Samantha Millsap said, “With touch screen devices becoming more present in our lives, in and outside the home, it is exciting to offer our young patrons these tablets which are just for them and full of interesting and educational games.”
